PHOTO: Monstrous Sea Creature Caught By Indonesian Fishermen

A monstrous sea creature which weight is an incredible 1.5 tons and length is more than 2 meters was caught by fishermen in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The extra rare Ocean Sunfish washed ashore in a critical condition and fishermen tried to drag it back out to sea in the hope it might recover. But the tide repeatedly pulled it back and the fish eventually died. The ocean sunfish or common mola, Mola mola, is the heaviest known bony fish in the world.

It has an average adult weight of 1,000 kg. The largest specimens can reach 4,3m vertically and 3m horizontally, weighing nearly 2,5 tons. The species is native to tropical and temperate waters around the globe. It resembles a fish head with a tail, and its main body is flattened laterally. Sunfish can be as tall as they are long when their dorsal and ventral fins are extended.

Sunfish develop their truncated, bullet-like shape because they are born with a back fin that never grows. Instead, it folds into itself. Mola in Latin means ‘millstone’ and describes the sunfish’s somewhat circular shape. They are a silvery color and have a rough skin texture. Besides, they are often mistaken for sharks when their huge dorsal fins emerge above the water.

Their teeth are fused into a beak-like structure and they are unable to fully close their relatively small mouths. Adult sunfish are vulnerable to few natural predators, but sea lions, killer whales, and sharks will consume them. Among humans, sunfish are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world, including Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
